“…n,gzra,yygjlwritten for brian ellis as a part of his ukulele concert commission series, mere particle... is a planned improvisation for one or two people, with the only restriction being that a solo acoustic or electroacoustic instrument be used for performance. the acoustic instrumentalist is tasked with improvising alongside randomized computer samples of mangled harpsichords and viols, a lifeless, soulless machination mimicking thought. when played by one musician, they are to handle both the analog and digital improvisations. in a two player version, the computer and acoustic improvisations are kept separately, discretely controlled. the title of the piece is derived from a quote by pioneer anarchist emma goldman, later published into a collection named anarchism and other writings. a stark anticapitalist message, each musical action is transformed into an act of labor, either from the human performer or from its notasalive, notasdead simulacrum. it seems our warm, stretchy skin has been updone by cold metal carapices. no. reduced to cold metal carapices... there is blame to be had, there is directionality in that word, reduced... there is an end to our toil. there is.iankonu.n…”
